NJIT Beats Purdue Fort Wayne Men's Volleyball 3-0

NEWARK, N.J. - No. 11 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball couldn't hold off the Highlanders of NJIT and fall 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-22) at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center on Thursday (Jan. 23).
The first and second sets were all the Highlanders, as they held the 'Dons to .118 and .095 hitting percentages. Richie Diedrich led the 'Dons with three blocks in the first two sets.
Tomas Gago and Pelegrin Vargas started off the third set with a kill each, to lead the Highlanders 2-0. Kade Bontrager helped the 'Dons take back the lead after trailing 13-14. Bontrager came into the match and had a kill right off the bat, tying it up at 14. Bontrager and Diedrich teamed up against the Highlanders and blocked their attack attempt to advance to 15-14. Purdue Fort Wayne was neck and neck with NJIT when Vargas had two kills back to back, allowing the Mastodons to lead 20-19. NJIT retook the lead in the end, finishing the match with two aces.
Gago led the Mastodons with .444 hitting and Diedrich finished off the match with four blocks, while Vargas led the 'Dons with 11 kills.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-2 and NJIT elevates to 3-2. Up next for the 'Dons will be No. 12 George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday (Jan. 25).
