Scouting Queens
The Royals are heading into the 2020 season after a second place finish at the Independent Volleyball Association Championship and a 10-19 overall record. Queens ended their season with a 3-0 loss against Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tennessee.
Scouting Belmont Abbey
The Belmont Abbey Crusaders are beginning their 2020 season after a 15-11 overall record in 2019. The Crusaders fell to the No. 6 seed North Greenville 3-1 in the Conference Carolinas quarterfinal on April 13.
Royals No More
The Mastodons had their first matchup against Queens in 2019 where the 'Dons came out on top with a 3-0 win. Richie Diedrich led the way with six kills and an .857 hitting percentage.
They're Baaacckkk
It's been five years since Purdue Fort Wayne has taken on Belmont Abbey and six years since the Crusaders have been at Arnie Ball Court. Three former 'Dons recorded double-digit kills in the most recent meeting. Alex Harthaller highlighted the match with 22 kills, Andrew Sellan tallied 20 kills and Tony Price had 13 kills. The Mastodons are leading the series 2-0.
Coaching Goals
Ryan "Rock" Perrotte will be entering his fifth season as the head coach for the Mastodons and his 17th season overall. Perrotte was named the head coach of Team USA for the World University Games held in Napoli, Italy over the summer. He has been a part of the USA Volleyball's High Performance system for nearly a decade and has coached at many High Performance Championships at A3, A2 and A1 summer camps.
1,000 Career Kills and Counting
Pelegrin Vargas enters 2020 third in the country in career kills, as he has 1,024 in the beginning of the season.
In the Top 15
Purdue Fort Wayne is in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll this week, coming in at No. 14. The 'Dons have been ranked in the poll for 306 weeks since its inception in 1986.
Elite Mastodons
The Mastodons have been stellar against opponents outside of the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll since April 1, 2017. The 'Dons are 31-2 against unranked teams since that date.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne finished up the 2019 season with a 17-12 record and a third place finish in the MIVA (8-6). The 'Dons defeated Lindenwood in the opening round of the MIVA Tournament on Arnie Ball Court.
