Three Mastodons Score in Double-Figures at IUPUI
12/13/2020 5:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS – Despite double-digit points from Riley Ott, Sierra Bell and Shayla Sellers, Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball dropped its rematch with IUPUI 80-59 on Sunday (Dec. 13) in the Jungle.
The Mastodons continue to be a force on the defensive side of the ball, as they now average 23.75 turnovers forced per contest, which is in the top 10 in the country and leads the Horizon League. They forced IUPUI into 23 miscues on Sunday. The 'Dons have now forced their opponents to commit 23 more turnovers than they have committed themselves this season, improving their league-leading turnover margin to 5.8.
Purdue Fort Wayne started the game on the right foot, taking a 6-2 lead after keeping the Jaguars scoreless after their initial bucket for nearly four minutes. Bell knocked in a 3-pointer and rolled in a layup to score five of the first six Mastodon points. The 'Dons forced IUPUI into six turnovers before the first media timeout. The Mastodons also held the Jaguars without a 3-pointer in their six attempts. IUPUI went on a 5-0 push, but just before the end of the first quarter, Jaida Wolfork made a layup after a spin move to her left hand to cut the lead to two points.
In the second quarter, Ott went on a 4-0 spurt on her own, knocking in a jumper with 5:14 on the clock and a layup 37 seconds later. Another 34 seconds later, Ott threw the ball inside as Margo Thompson found a mismatch in the post and converted an old-fashioned 3-point play. IUPUI's offense clicked in the second quarter, however, as the Jaguars scored 29 points with a 71.4 percent shooting clip. Just before halftime, Ott found an opening in the lane to go for an easy two points, then found Rylie Parker open on the wing for a triple on the next possession. Ott scored her first eight points in the second quarter.
Early in the third frame, Ott scored a close-range shot and on the subsequent IUPUI possession, she picked off an errant pass and went coast-to-coast to lay in a bucket. Bell went on a 6-0 run on her own from the 5:03 to 2:43 marks where she knocked in a jumper, a pair of free throws and a layup. Purdue Fort Wayne forced IUPUI into three turnovers in this stretch.
Two minutes into the fourth, Parker picked off an IUPUI pass and found Sellers on the other end for a triple. This was the 21st Jaguar turnover and the 10th Mastodon steal. Parker stole it again on the following possession, and then Sellers got another two points on a layup. This was the bulk of a 7-0 run that the Mastodons used to cut the lead to 11. IUPUI found some buckets down the stretch to bolster the final score.
Ott led the Mastodons with 18 points, followed by Sellers with 15 and Bell with 13. Ott also led on the defensive end with four steals, while Sellers and Parker swiped three.
IUPUI's Macee Williams pushed the Jaguars ahead with 20 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-4, 0-2 Horizon League while IUPUI improves to 4-1, 2-0. The Mastodons have Northern Kentucky on the schedule next as the Norse will visit Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday, December 19 and Sunday December 20. Those contests will be broadcast on ESPN+.
