Normally for Winning Wednesday we take a look back at some memorable wins for the 'Dons, but for 12 weeks we'll be featuring the best of the best in Mastodon history. Each week, we'll highlight a class of the Mastodon Hall of Fame.
2008 Hall of Fame Class
Norman Almodovar - Men's Volleyball - Led the Mastodons to three NCAA Tournaments in 1991, 1992 and 1994 ... Won four MIVA regular season championships and two tournament championships ... Two-time All-MIVA selection ... AVCA All-America Honorable Mention ... Top 10 in program history in kills (8th, 1450), aces (7th, 114), digs (8th, 647) and points (7th, 1765).
Arthur and Elizabeth "Betty" Friedel - Supporters - Betty, who has been sadly missed since her passing in 2002, was a huge fan of Head Coach Arnie Ball and the IPFW Men's Volleyball Team ... Art, who had been with IPFW for 40 years, was professor emeritus of the Chemistry Department ... In 2003, Art funded the "Betty Friedel Endowed Scholarship" for men's volleyball in memory of his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Friedel.
Jay Golsteyn - Men's Volleyball - Two-time AVCA All-America selection ... Two-time MIVA Player of the Year ... IPFW Male Athlete of the Year in 1989 ... Four-time All-MIVA selection ... Second in program history in kills with 1,939, eighth in aces with 107, and second in digs with 816 ... Also a member of the MIVA Hall of Fame.
Matt Hein - Men's Soccer - First Team All-America in 1999 ... Earned Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year in 1999 ... Led the Mastodons to the NCAA Elite 8 and a 17-4-2 season ... Scored the game-winning goal against Truman State in the Central Regional ... 11th in program history with 18 goals ... Led the Mastodons to their first GLVC regular season and tournament championships.
Joanne Lantz - Supporter, Administrator - Served as Chancellor at IPFW from 1988 to 1994 ... Was a driving force in the campaign which resulted in the naming of the Hilliard Gates Sports Center ... Chancellor Lantz was proud to represent IPFW at the 1991 NCAA men's volleyball championships in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
Fred Malcolm - Men's Volleyball - MIVA Player of the Year in 1991 ... Two-time AVCA All-America selection ... Three-time member of the All-MIVA team ... Third in program history in kills with 1,912 and blocks with 210 ... Won two regular season MIVA championships and won the program's first MIVA tournament in 1991 ... Earned a berth to the 1991 NCAA Tournament.
Andy Piazza - Men's Basketball - Served as the men's basketball head coach for nine seasons ... Amassed 143 wins, which is the most in program history ... Led the Mastodons to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championship in 1992-93 ... Led the 'Dons to an NCAA Division II ranking as high as No. 4.
Joni Smith-Price - Women's Volleyball - AVCA All-Great Lakes Region selection in 1987 and 1989 ... All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team member in 1987 and 1988 ... 10th in program history in digs per set with 3.32 for her career ... Led the Mastodons to three GLVC regular season and tournament championships ... Member of the 1,000-kill, 1000-dig clubs.
Judy Yagodinski Kohrman - Women's Volleyball - Division II All-America Honorable Mention ... All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree in 1985, 1986 and 1987 ... GLVC Player of the Year in 1986 and 1987 ... 1987 IPFW Female Athlete of the Year ... Led the Mastodons to three GLVC regular season and tournament championships.
Lisa Jo Zehr Morlan - Women's Volleyball - All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First Team honoree in 1986 and 1988 ... Holds single-match record for solo blocks with 10 vs. Northern Kentucky and at Butler ... Helped lead the Mastodons to three GLVC regular season and tournament championships ... Also a member of the women's basketball in 1984-85.
