Kasey Lilly in Ninth After Day One at UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate

PALM CITY, Fla. - In the opening round of the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate on Friday (Feb. 14), Purdue Fort Wayne freshman Kasey Lilly led the Mastodons with a career-best 4-under 68.
The tournament is being played at the Osprey Course at the Martin Downs Golf Club with 6,802 yards separating the opening tee and final pin.
Lilly had a bogey-free front nine, with birdies on holes three, four and eight. He followed it up with five straight pars on the back nine, coupled with two more birdies on 15 and 18. His only bogey of the day came on 17. Lilly is in a tie for ninth place through the first 18 holes.
Eric Brinker had a 2-under 70 thanks to a 33 on the front nine. He had an eagle 3 on the 482-yard third hole, and birdies on six and eight. On the back, Brinker got back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to card a 37. He is tied for 26th overall.
Callahan Elzey brought in a 73 for a tie for 53rd. He had two birdies on the front on two and eight. The senior carded three more on the back nine on 10, 13 and 18 for an even 36.
Freshman Burke Pitz played a consistent opening round, dropping 14 pars, which was the fourth-most of anyone in the field. He birdied the third hole and finished the round a 2-over for a 74. He is in a tie for 59th.
Jacob Deakyne rounded out the team representatives with a 76 for a tie at 68th place. He birdied three and 13, and had 11 pars on the day.
Cody White and Parker Deakyne played as individuals. White tied for 33rd with a 1-under 71, while Deakyne carded a 79 for 84th.
As a team, the Mastodons brought a 285 into the clubhouse for 10th place. This is tied for the 12th-best round in program history. Host UNC Greensboro leads the tournament through day one with a 270. Jonathan Brightwell of UNCG led the pack with a school-record 10-under 62.
The Mastodons will take the course again on Saturday morning for the second round of the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate.
