'Dons Fall to Quincy in Five Sets

QUINCY, Ill. - No. 9 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball couldn't overcome Quincy's defense and fell 3-2 (22-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11) at the Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Feb. 15).
1st Set
The Mastodons began set one with a three-point scoring run. Frederico Santos had an ace and Jake Mailloux had a kill to help the 'Dons lead 3-0. Quincy tried to match up, but the 'Dons went on a four-point run to advance to 12-7 after three attack errors by the Hawks. Tomas Gago closed the set with a kill, putting the ball in between two Quincy blockers and finishing the set 25-22.
2nd Set
In set two, the Mastodons started with another three-point run with two kills from Pelegrin Vargas. The Hawks took the lead 9-4, but Purdue Fort Wayne came back after a kill by Mailloux and Rico Wardlow, tying up the set at nine. After falling behind 12-10, the Mastodons went on a six-point scoring run to make a comeback 16-12. Vargas recorded two kills and Wilmer Hernandez had three aces at the service line. The set went into extra points, but Purdue Fort Wayne came back and ended the set 29-27.
3rd Set
During set three, Quincy took control early and maintained momentum. Hernandez collected two more aces to take the lead 8-6, but could not hold on for long. The Hawks came back and finished up the set 25-23.
4th Set
Quincy opened up set four 2-0. It was back-and-forth until the 'Dons went on a six-point run taking the lead 17-16, forcing a Quincy timeout. Richie Diedrich had two blocks during the run and Vargas had two kills. Both teams fought for the lead, but Quincy took the set 25-23.
5th Set
Going into set five, Jon Diedrich had the first kill of the set, allowing the 'Dons to lead 1-0. After trading points, Quincy built a 10-7 lead. Gago had two kills in a row and Hernandez and Vargas added two more kills. The Hawks had a 4-2 run to close the match.
