Mastodons Beat Central Michigan, Fall to Florida Gulf Coast on Day One

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - On the opening day of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge on Monday (Feb. 3), Purdue Fort Wayne defeated Central Michigan 4-1, and fell to top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast 2-1-2.
The Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club was played at 6,068 yards.
In the opening match against Central Michigan, Holly Anderson led the way with a 6 and 4 win over Meghan Deardorff. She took her first lead with a three on the third hole, and was never met again. Kennedy Brooker beat Jami Laude 5 and 3, taking the lead for good on the sixth hole.
Laura Caetano won 2 and 1 over Claudia Salvador. Caetano took a lead on the first hole, and went up by three through three holes. Salvador evened the match by the sixth hole, and the two headed to the back nine tied. Caetano won the 10th hole and did not yield the lead for the remainder of the round. Linnzie Richner finished the morning with a 1-up win over Padgett Chitty. Richner never trailed, and took the lead for good on hole 15.
Emma Schroeder dropped her opening round 1-down to Zoe Varytan. Schroeder led from hole four to hole 13, but Varytan won three of the last four holes to take the match.
In the second round of the day, Anderson was the only Mastodon to win her match. She beat Alisa Clark 2 and 1 after taking the lead at the fourth hole and holding it for the duration.
Brooker and Caetano both picked up ties against Florida Gulf Coast. Brooker spent the afternoon going back and forth with Isabella Portokalis. The tie was not determined until the 18th hole, when Brooker evened it up. Caetano trailed Laura Edmonds in her match by as many as two on hole 13, but she took the 14th and 16th holes to tie it up. This tie held until the end of the round.
Richner held even for the first two holes, but FGCU's Natalia Nassar led by as many as four on the front nine. Nassar won the match 5 and 4. Schroeder never trailed on the front nine in her match against Sarah Edwards, but she tied it up on 10. Edwards would go on to take the match 2 and 1.
Purdue Fort Wayne will have a match against Northern Illinois tomorrow morning, with a chance to play for fifth place in the Mid-American Match Play Challenge.
