Scouting Urbana
The Blue Knights are making their way to Fort Wayne after falling 3-1 to the Lindenwood Lions. Tyler Chavez and Jack Brinkman led the way with both recording double-digit kills. Chavez hit .212 while putting down a career-high 12 kills along with four digs and an assist. Brinkman swung at a .167 clip with 10 kills, five digs and two assists. Urbana will make a stop in Muncie, Indiana on Thursday (Feb. 6) to face off against Ball State at 7 p.m
Scouting Loyola
After a 3-0 loss to Barton, the Ramblers are hosting Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday (Feb. 8) to kick off MIVA play. Kyle Piekarski had a career-high 13 kills and season-high five blocks against the Barton Bulldogs. Taylan Cook had a career-high six digs and Ian Cowen posted 40 assists. Cole Schlothauer was the only Rambler to hit double-digit kills (13).
New Decade, New Program
Urbana had the program's first-ever volleyball match on Jan. 3 when they fell to North Greenville 3-1. The Blue Knights won the second match 25-23 and tallied 38 kills and had a hitting percentage of .198. Urbana went head to head with Wittenberg on Tuesday (Jan. 14), when they went to five sets, winning sets three (25-18) and four (25-18). Chaz Hafer is ranked 27th in the national rankings for assists per set (8.35) and Jack Brinkman is 39th in the country for kills per set (3.03).
Ramblers vs. 'Dons
Last time the 'Dons and Ramblers met was on May 17, 2019 for the MIVA Semifinals. Loyola won the match 3-1, advancing to the MIVA Finals. Pelegrin Vargas finished the match with a team-high 14 kills while pitching in eight digs. Troy Gooch came in off the bench midway through the first set to record a then-career-high 10 digs.
Nothin' But Awards
Pelegrin Vargas took home his fifth-career MIVA Offensive Player of the Week award on Tuesday (Jan. 28) for the second consecutive week. Vargas earned 31 kills against NJIT and George Mason. Against George Mason, he had 20 kills (5.00 per set) with a hitting percentage of .386. While the Mastodons dropped their match at NJIT on Thursday (Jan. 23), Vargas led the team with 11 kills in three sets (3.67 per set). Vargas finished the week averaging 4.43 kills per set and a .278 hitting percentage.
In the Top 15
Purdue Fort Wayne is in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll this week, coming in at No. 10. The 'Dons have been ranked in the poll for 310 weeks since its inception in 1986.
Elite Mastodons
The Mastodons have been stellar against opponents outside of the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll since April 1, 2017. The 'Dons are 34-3 against unranked teams since that date.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne played No. 12 George Mason on Saturday (Jan. 25), and the Mastodons defeated the Patriots 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 25-19). Richie Diedrich tallied a career-high 12 total blocks, contributing to the 18 total team blocks. This is the most blocks the Mastodons have had since February 3, 2017 against McKendree. The Mastodons kept the Patriots at .000 hitting percentage in the first set and the fourth set, and Mason finished with just .061 hitting.
