Dominating First Half Performance Helps ‘Dons to 70-63 Win at Denver
2/8/2020 9:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DENVER – Purdue Fort Wayne held Denver to a season-low 19 points in the first half as the Mastodons tipped the Pioneers 70-63 in a Summit League men's basketball contest at Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 8).
The 19-point first half was the Mastodons' best defensive half of the season against a Division I opponent. Denver shot 27.6 percent (6-of-22) in the period and committed 12 turnovers. Offensively, the 'Dons took the lead for good thanks to an extended 29-7 run that lasted more than 10 minutes. It put the Mastodons up 20 and they eventually took a 38-19 lead to the break.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to 13 points a few minutes into the second half but a pair of 3-pointers by Brian Patrick helped eventually get the lead back to 22 points. The 'Dons would never lead by fewer than double-digits until the final minute when the Mastodons ran out the clock.
Three 'Dons finished in double-digits. Freshman Deonte Billups notched his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Patrick also had 15 points, 12 in the second half as he nailed three 3-pointers. Jarred Godfrey totaled 14 points.
The Mastodon defense was crucial to the win. Cameron Benford finished with a +10. Only Billups at +15 and Patrick at +12 were better.
The Mastodons improve to 12-14 (5-6 Summit League). The Pioneers fall to 5-20 (1-10 Summit League). The 'Dons are off until Friday when they head to North Dakota State for a matchup against the first-place Bison.
