Madeline Swart Hits Home Run, But 'Dons Fall at Saint Louis

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Despite holding the lead for four innings, Purdue Fort Wayne softball dropped a doubleheader to Saint Louis on Wednesday (March 11) 4-3 and 7-1 at the Billiken Sports Center.
GAME 1
In the first at bat of the game, Madeline Swart hit a home run to right center, putting the 'Dons up from the start. Alise Hale reached on a fielder's choice, and Kyndell Ethridge scored on an error by the Billiken shortstop.
Saint Louis got on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly that brought in a runner from third base. The Mastodons kept SLU off the scoreboard in the fourth, but the difference in the game came in the fifth. Saint Louis got a three-run homer from the leadoff spot to take the lead for good.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored in the seventh as Olivia Stansbury reach on a fielder's choice and Hale scored on a SLU miscue.
Five different 'Dons recorded a hit.
Shainea Eyre fell to 3-6, while Kaylea Chappelle took the win to improve to the same record.
GAME 2
Saint Louis got off to a hot start in game two the way the 'Dons did in game one, as the Billikens got a home run out of their leadoff hitter. Another homer from cleanup put the BIllikens up 3-0 in the first.
SLU got another in the third on a solo homer. Purdue Fort Wayne answered with a run in the fifth as Brooke Imel singled to right center to advance Mariah Grant home. In the seventh, Swart drew a walk and Imel pushed her to third, but the 'Dons could not extend the contest.
Imel finished with a team-high three hits, all singles.
Lauren McConnell fell to 0-10 and Chloe Wendling improved to 3-4. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-21 while Saint Louis improves to 8-13. The Mastodons will return to the Billiken Sports Center on Friday (March 13) to play UIC and Omaha.
