Richie Diedrich has Career-High, But Mastodons Fall to Loyola Chicago 3-1
3/5/2020 11:26:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite taking the opening set from the Ramblers, Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball dropped a Thursday night (March 5) match to Loyola Chicago 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 34-32, 25-21).
Purdue Fort Wayne got off to a solid start, building a 12-7 lead in the opening frame to force a Loyola timeout. This came after Wilmer Hernandez and Richie Diedrich had three kills in four points. Diedrich finished with a career-high 15 kills, as the Mastodons were able to run a lot of offense through the middle. Between he and Tomas Gago, the Mastodons had 44 swings from middle blockers. Jon Diedrich finished off the opening set with kill to give the Mastodons an early 1-0 advantage. The 'Dons hit .414 in the first set.
The momentum started to shift to Loyola in the second set after an 8-2 run to push the Ramblers up 13-8. Purdue Fort Wayne responded with a timeout and a 5-0 stretch later on, spurred by a kill from Richie Diedrich and a block created by him and Hernandez. The Mastodons crept within one at 23-22, but Loyola took two of the last three on kills from Cole Schlothauer.
The third set was a marathon, going well into extra points. Runs back-and-forth were the story early on as Loyola built a 22-17 lead. The Mastodons went on a 6-0 run to go up 23-22, in which Jon Diedrich had a pair of aces (one coming on a rotation error from the Ramblers) and Pelegrin Vargas had three kills. Loyola went up one after that point 24-23, but Purdue Fort Wayne staved off a set point and took two in a row themselves: two straight kills by Vargas. The Ramblers responded with a kill from Kyle Piekarski, but Gago slammed down a kill of his own to give the 'Dons another set point opportunity. Loyola took two in a row to go up 27-26, and the two squads traded points back-and-forth until 32-all. Loyola took the final two points by forcing a triple block to stuff a Mastodon attack and Purdue Fort Wayne committing an unforced error. Vargas had 11 kills in the third set alone.
The Ramblers took advantage of the 2-1 edge, taking and holding a lead up to the media timeout at 15-13. Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 5-2 run to go up 18-17, but Loyola went on a 7-2 run of its own to close the match. Schlothauer had the two final kills of the night for the Ramblers.
Vargas finished with a team-high 22 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while hitting .356. Richie Diedrich's career-high 15 kills was made on 22 swings for .545 hitting. The younger Diedrich notched 14 kills and Gago chipped in 12 on .455 hitting. Troy Gooch had 10 digs, while Frederico Santos dished out 50 assists to lead the Mastodons to .299 hitting.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 8-7, 3-5 MIVA, while Loyola Chicago improves to 7-11, 4-4 MIVA. The Mastodons will have a chance at a get-right game tomorrow night (March 6) when Sacred Heart visits Arnie Ball Court. The Pioneers have just one win in their last 10 matches, which came over North Park.
