Horizon League Preview
The Orlando Invitational will give an inside look at how Purdue Fort Wayne will compete in the Horizon League, as the course is the home of the Horizon League Championship, and there are five of the eight teams in the League at the Orlando Inviational: Oakland, Wright State, IUPUI, Detroit Mercy and Youngstown State. El Campeón has also been the host of the Horizon League Men's Golf Championship since 2011. Last season at the Horizon League championships, Wright State won with 888, Youngstown State was third with 899, Oakland was fourth at 900, IUPUI was fifth with 903 and Detroit Mercy was eighth at 935. For context, last season at the Summit League Championships, Purdue Fort Wayne shot 900.
El Campeón Championship Course
Surrounded by an abundance of natural Florida beauty, the El Campeón 18-hole championship course was designed by Chicago-based course architect, George O'Neil and built in 1917 – with further enhancements in 1926 by Charles E. Clarke of Troon, Scotland. El Campeón is one of the South's oldest golf courses and blends unusual Central Florida elevation changes of more than 85 feet with features of traditional golf design, including spectacular rolling fairways and undulating greens. The course's signature hole is the par 5, 17th hole, which features a long double dogleg that has more obstacles than some entire courses.
Mastodon Lineup
The Mastodons will travel eight players to Florida: Callahan Elzey, Eric Brinker, Kasey Lilly, Burke Pitz, Cody White, Parker Deakyne, Jacob Deakyne, and Jake Kennedy. Three will play as individuals, while five play for the team score.
(Double) Eagle
Last fall, Kasey Lilly became the first Mastodon to record an eagle and a double-eagle in the same day of play. He did this by carding a 3 on the 10th hole at the NCR Country Club. He turned around on his second round and nailed his second shot on the 560-yard par-five sixth for the only albatross in the field.
Top-10 Finishes
Eric Brinker and Callahan Elzey lead the Mastodons in career top-10 finishes. Brinker has four, including a medalist honor at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in his freshman year in 2018. Elzey has five, three of which came last season. He earned a top-five finish twice last season as a junior.
Last Time Out
Kasey Lilly led Purdue Fort Wayne with a 1-under 215 at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate, pushing the Mastodons to an 11th-place finish. He had a 4-under 68 on the opening round and an even 72 for the third round.
Next Time Up
Purdue Fort Wayne will stay in Florida to compete at the Gary Freeman Invitational hosted by Bethune-Cookman on March 12 in Daytona Beach.
