MILWAUKEE - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball dropped its opening game against Milwaukee on Friday (Jan. 8) 62-42 in the Klotsche Center.
It was a 23-7 Milwaukee second quarter that made the difference in the game. The Panthers finished the frame on a 21-4 run.
The Mastodons took their first lead with 26 seconds left in the first quarter as Sierra Bell dropped in a layup to make it 13-11. Riley Ott had tied the game 36 seconds earlier with a free throw.
In the second quarter, Valerie Clark buried a triple after Amellia Bromenschenkel blocked a Panther shot right under the rim.
The 'Dons started the scoring in the third quarter with a jumper from Ott. Purdue Fort Wayne had a 7-2 push near the end of the quarter thanks to a layup from Hannah Hess, a 3-pointer from Ott, and a Rylie Parker transition layup. Parker got the bucket after running with her own steal from the other end.
Shayla Sellers and Margo Thompson had back-to-back scores in the fourth quarter but this was after the Panthers had a run of their own. The Mastodons held Milwaukee without a field goal for the final 5:15 of the game.
Ott led the Mastodons in scoring with 12 points. Aubrey Stupp grabbed a career-high six rebounds. The Mastodons forced Milwaukee to commit 19 turnovers.
Milwaukee improves to 10-1, 7-0 Horizon League while the 'Dons fall to 0-9, 0-7 Horizon. These two teams will meet again tomorrow (Saturday, January 9) at 7 p.m. ET.
