Mastodons Defeat Robert Morris for Horizon League Win

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team picked up its first Horizon League win of the season on Friday (Oct. 1) with a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20) win over Robert Morris.
The Mastodons started the match with a 4-0 run thanks to a block from Leigha Baldwin and Maggie Castleman followed by an ace from Katie Crowe. This lead held until RMU took a 12-11 lead. The 'Dons responded back with a 3-0 run with a Ramei Jackson kill that was sandwiched by two Madelyn Wurster kills. RMU went up 22-21, the 'Dons tied it up at 23, but then RMU took the last two points of the set.
Purdue Fort Wayne used a 5-1 run early in the second set that was featured four kills, then an ace from Alexandra Traciak. RMU re-took the lead later on, going up 20-18 to force a Mastodon timeout. The 'Dons rattled off four in a row with two kills from Jackson, one from Nicole Jones, and an ace from Wurster. RMU had a set point opportunity at 24-23, but Purdue Fort Wayne iced the server, then got a kill from Castleman to even the score at one set apiece. The Mastodons hit .417 in the second set, outhitting the Colonials' .379.
Castleman served to start the third set, picking up two aces in the opening 5-0 run. RMU quickly evened the score at eight, forcing a Mastodon timeout. From this point, the 'Dons started to run away with the set, spurred in part with a 4-0 run that had two aces from Castleman. Shortly after that, a 5-1 run put the 'Dons up 22-14 to force a second Robert Morris timeout. After a kill from Castleman, the 'Dons had five set point opportunities before taking the 2-1 edge.
A 6-0 run early in the fourth set saw Castleman pick up her 10th and 11th kills of the match to give Purdue Fort Wayne a 9-5 lead. RMU fought back to lead 18-15 later on in the set, but Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 7-0 run that Traciak punctuated with an ace to go up 22-18. The Colonials got two, but the 'Dons took the next three with kills from Baldwin, Wurster and Crowe. Castleman had six of her match-high 15 kills in the final set.
In her second start, Baldwin had a career-high eight blocks of the 'Dons' nine. Crowe had a double-double with 12 digs to go with her 14 kills.
