Purdue Fort Wayne Defeats Youngstown State 3-0 on the Road

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team picked up its second-straight Horizon League victory on Saturday (Oct. 1), as the Mastodons beat Youngstown State 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-20) in the Beeghly Center.
The Mastodon defense got the job done in the opening set, holding YSU to an anemic .000. Midway through the set, Katie Crowe had back-to-back aces after a kill from Ramei Jackson to go up 10-6. Jackson got her third kill of the set on her third swing, forcing YSU to call timeout at 22-16.
The second set featured better offense from the Mastodons, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to three kills from Maggie Castleman and an ace from Madison Gates. A 6-0 run closed the set as well, with kills coming from Crowe (1), Castleman (2) and Leigha Baldwin (1). The 'Dons got a block from Nicole Jones and Baldwin to close the frame. Purdue Fort Wayne finished the set with 17 kills on 31 attacks for a .452 hitting percentage.
The third set was even more of the same, as the 'Dons jumped out to a 6-1 lead thanks to two kills from Crowe and a pair of aces from Rachael Crucis. A 3-0 run later on saw an ace from Crowe and a kill from Castleman to force a YSU timeout at 13-5. The 'Dons closed the match on a 5-2 stretch, including a pair of kills from Jackson and the match-winning kill from Castleman.
Crowe had a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Her 12 kills came on 24 attacks for a .417 hitting percentage. Crucis had 13 digs. Crucis and Crowe had three aces each.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 4-15, 2-4 in Horizon League play. Youngstown State falls to 3-11, 0-3 Horizon. The Mastodons will take the floor again on October 8 at Northern Kentucky.
