CHICAGO - Thanks to a 34th minute goal from Alejandro Lopez, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team defeated UIC 2-0 at Flames Field on Saturday night (Oct. 16).
The Mastodons' second Horizon League win of the season was as physical as they come, as UIC's Nkusuwila Zulu was issued a red card in the 20th minute. This was one of 10 cards in the contest.
Purdue Fort Wayne took advantage of playing a man up for 70 minutes of the match, netting its first goal in minute 34. On his own, Lopez drove from the left side of the field into the 18, ripping a right-footed shot into the lower right corner of the net. This was his team-high third goal of the season.
After the break, Nathaniel Edwards gave the Mastodons a security goal by blasting a shot from outside the 18 that slammed into the crossbar and past the UIC keeper. Luke Benford was credited with the first assist of his career. The second half was all Mastodons, as they out-shot UIC 13-7 after halftime.
Edwards and Seth Mahlmeister had four shots and two shots on goal each. Danny Salazar picked up the solo shutout in his first-career start. He faced 12 shots with three on target. The 'Dons owned an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 4-8-1, 2-5-0 Horizon League with the win. UIC falls to 6-5-2, 4-3-0. The 'Dons will step out of Horizon League play on Tuesday, October 19 when No. 17 Bowling Green comes to the Hefner Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. match.
