CLEVELAND - Despite leading for nearly the entire second half, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team fell in overtime to Cleveland State 2-1 on the road.
In the first half, neither team was able to score, but the Mastodons had several dangerous chances. Ali Nasser had a shot to the bottom right corner that was saved in minute 26. Less than two minutes later, Moses Akimana had a header that hit off the crossbar after a Mastodon corner kick. Despite the 'Dons having a 6-3 shots advantage, with a 3-0 edge in on-target shots, neither team had scored before the break.
Just 2:56 after halftime, Luke Benford ripped a shot from inside the 18 to the lower right corner. His shot came immediately after Nathaniel Edwards sent in a hard strike that could have been a shot on goal had Benford not controlled the ball to shoot it on his own. Edwards was credited with an assist. This was Benford's first goal of the season and the fourth of his career.
Once the Mastodon goal came, Cleveland State's offense clicked together, as the Vikings had an 9-2 edge in shots for the remainder of the period. The Vikings got a goal to go in minute 87 from Bojan Kolevski. He was assisted by Albert Portas.
In overtime, it only took Cleveland State one shot to score, when Jannis Schmidt found the back of the net off an assist from Kolevski.
After 95 minutes, the Mastodons led in shots on goal 5-3. Benford led the Mastodons with four shots, two on goal.
