The Purple Aces are coming off their only loss of the year, an 85-74 double-overtime loss at Eastern Illinois. Abby Feit is leading UE in points and rebounds, recording 24.0 points and 9.3 boards per game.
The Series
Purdue Fort Wayne leads the all-time series against the Purple Aces 3-2, with Evansville taking the first and most recent wins. The Mastodons' most recent victory came in 2019, when Hannah Albrecht scored 30 to lead the 'Dons to a 67-64 win.
How They Got Here
The Mastodons are 3-0, 2-0 Horizon League, but have only played two games. Per League regulations vetted by multiple membership groups and approved by the Horizon League Council, the 'Dons took a forfeit win over IUPUI due to the Jaguars having positive COVID-19 cases among their program. The 'Dons won their other two games over Manchester (102-35) and UIC (69-63).
What's at Stake This Week
If the Mastodons win on Wednesday, Purdue Fort Wayne will be 4-0 for the first time since joining Division I in 2001. It will be the first time since the 1995-96 season that the 'Dons start 4-0. In 1995-96, the Mastodons started the season with 14-straight wins, which started a 23-5 season that ended with a berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Back 2 Back!
Ryin Ott was selected as the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the second time in as many weeks on Monday, November 22. Ott helped lead the Mastodons to a 69-63 win over UIC by registering a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Through two weeks of action, Ott averaged 15.0 points per game, more than double of any other freshman in the league. This ranked eighth in the league among all players.
Taking Care of the Basketball
With all games through November 21, Purdue Fort Wayne has the second-fewest turnovers in the country with 24. Cal Poly is leading the country in that category with just 20. The mastodons are 17th in the country in turnovers per game at 12.0. Colorado State is the nation's best a 9.0 per game.
Shayla's Career Night
Shayla Sellers had her best performance as a Mastodon against UIC on November 18. She scored 23 and grabbed 11 rebounds, both career-highs, while shooting 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the floor, 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the fre. Sellers had only three points and three rebounds at halftime, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight boards after the intermission.
Double-Double Trouble
In the Mastodons' 69-63 win over UIC, Purdue Fort Wayne got double-doubles out of Shayla Sellers and Ryin Ott. Sellers had career-highs in both points and rebounds with 23 and 11. Ott went for 14 points and 10 rebounds, the latter of which was a career-high.
In a League of Their Own
Shayla Sellers (16 ppg, 9 rpg) and Ryin Ott (15 ppg, 8 rpg) are two of just three players in the Horizon League averaging at least 15 points and eight rebounds per game. The only other player on this list is Youngstown State's Lilly Ritz, averaging 18 points and eight boards.
Perfect From the Line
Purdue Fort Wayne is the only Horizon League team with any players that have averaged at least 2.5 free throws made per game and are also perfect from the stripe. The Mastodons actually have two! Shayla Sellers and Aubrey Stupp are 6-of-6 and 10-of-10, respectively. They are two of 28 players in Division I that meet those criteria.
3 and Oh So Nice
Maria Marchesano is the second coach in Mastodon women's basketball history to start 3-0 in their career. Kirk Kavanaugh, who coached the Mastodons from 1982-85, started his career 4-0. This opening four games included a 71-66 overtime win over Indiana Tech, where he was 32-10 as the head coach from 1980-82.
Last Time Out
Behind career-high points and rebounds from Shayla Sellers, the 'Dons moved to 2-0 with a 69-63 win over UIC. Sellers and Ryin Ott both recorded double-doubles. The Mastodons took a forfeit win over IUPUI to move to 3-0.
