The Series
Purdue Fort Wayne owns a 4-3 edge over the Spartans in the all-time series, but have not played a regular season since 1983. The two squads played exhibitions in 2009 and 2010, both of which the Mastodons won, the earlier being a 92-30 game, the latter at 96-40. The 'Dons also won the last two regular season games 63-55 and 72-51.
Hello Old Friend!
Purdue Fort Wayne head coach Maria Marchesano was an assistant coach under Manchester's head coach Josh Dzurick when she was at MU in 2010-12. Under the leadership of Dzurick and Marchesano, the Spartans were 21-17. They were 7-4 in 2011-12 before Marchesano took the head coach position at Urbana mid-year.
Marchesano's Season Openers
As a head coach, Maria Marchesano has a career record of 8-1 in home openers. She is 5-4 in season openers.
Open Up Wide!
Purdue Fort Wayne has an all-time record of 18-27 in season openers and a 26-19 record in home openers. In the Division I era, the Mastodons have a 10-10 home opener record.
Meet The Newcomers
The Mastodons have six newcomers on the roster for 2021-22. There are two transfers, Shianne Johnson and Sylare Starks, and four true freshmen: Abbigail Stephens, Ryin Ott, Jazzlyn Linbo and Audra Emmerson. Johnson comes from Weber State and Starks comes from fellow Horizon League member Detroit Mercy.
That's a Long Name!
Amellia Bromenschenkel has the second-longest name in the Horizon League with 21 letters in her name. The only player with a longer name is UIC's Tamara Fournillier-Onadeko with 24 letters.
How Was Oakland's Shooting? Not Great Bob!
In Purdue Fort Wayne's second game against Oakland last year, the Mastodons held the Golden Grizzlies without a 3-pointer, forcing OU to go 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. This was the worst shooting performance by an opponent since Illinois went 0-for-21 against the 'Dons in 2014.
Shayla's Impact on the Horizon
Shayla Sellers was fifth in the Horizon League in blocks per game in 2020-21 with 1.09 per game.
**Cough Cough**... It Up
In the Mastodons' last season opener against SIUE, the 'Dons forced SIUE to commit 28 turnovers. That was the most a Mastodon team has forced since Milwaukee coughed up 29 turnovers against the 'Dons on December 28, 2015.
One Smart Margo
While at Anderson High School, Margo Thompson enrolled in Ohio's College Credit Plus program, which allowed her to earn enough credits to have an associate's degree in liberal arts from Chatfield College while a sophomore at Anderson. She took it a step further and was working toward her degree in mathematics at the University of Cincinnati while still at the secondary level. Even despite an advanced academic workload, Thompson was the valedictorian of her class at Anderson High School.
But She's Not the Only Valedictorian!
While Margo Thompson was selected as the valedictorian at Anderson High School, she is not the only valedictorian on the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team. Aubrey Stupp, another Mastodon sophomore, was the valedictorian of her class at Valley View High School.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne is coming off a 1-22 season, which ended with a 62-59 loss at Youngstown State in the Horizon League Championship.
Coming Up
The Mastodons will travel down I-60 to Muncie, Indiana to play at Ball State on Friday, November 12. The 'Dons will return home on Thursday, November 18, when Horizon League play begins against UIC.
Masks are required at all times for spectators at the Gates Sports Center and the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
