FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A swarming defensive performance lifted the Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball team to a 71-57 Horizon League victory over Northern Kentucky on Saturday (Dec. 4).
The Mastodons limited the Norse to 36.2 percent (21-of-58) shooting in the contest and forced 18 NKU turnovers.
Purdue Fort Wayne took a 36-20 lead to the break with their best defensive effort in a half since limiting Denver to 14 points in the first half on Feb. 26, 2020. NKU was 7-of-30 in the first 20 minutes. The Norse crashed the boards and picked up 11 offensive rebounds in the half, but turned them into only four second chance points. Jalon Pipkins had two dunks in the half, including a one-handed alley-oop throw down on a feed from Damian Chong Qui.
Northern Kentucky increased the defensive pressure in the second half, trying to get back in the game. It worked for a bit, scoring seven straight points and making it a 43-33 game with 10:55 left. But it was as close as the Norse would get. An 8-2 Mastodon run followed to put the game away. Ra Kpedi scored all nine of his points in the second half to help ice the contest.
Jalon Pipkins had a game-high 21 points in the game, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor, with four steals. Jarred Godfrey contributed 14 points with five assists. Kpedi had a game-high nine rebounds including four on the offensive glass.
The 'Dons didn't miss a free throw on Thursday against Wright State, and their eye continued on Saturday, making 14-of-16 from the charity strip against the Norse.
Northern Kentucky was led by Trey Robinson's 16 points
The Norse fall to 2-5 (0-2 Horizon League). The 'Dons improve to 4-4 (1-1 Horizon League). The Mastodons return to non-league play next week with a road trip to SIUE on Wednesday (Dec. 8).
