FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The men's volleyball team defeated the Quincy Hawks 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-16) Saturday (Feb. 13) in their second matchup of the season.
Freshman Vicente Ibarra led the Mastodons with 16 kills and Pelegrin Vargas followed with 13. The 'Dons had eight aces with Vargas and Richie Diedrich leading with four and three, respectively.
Frederico Santos had 39 assists to lead the Mastodons to a .402 hitting percentage. This was the first time that a Mastodons team hit above .400 since February 7, 2020 against Urbana.
The Mastodons held Quincy without an ace, which was the first time since January 11, 2020 against Belmont Abbey.
In the first set, the 'Dons took advantage of the slide attack, with Richie Diedrich getting Purdue Fort Wayne to a 24-17 edge. Vargas finished off the set with a kill. The team hit .411 led by Ibarra with five of the team's 15 kills.
The second set went into extra points with the 'Dons winning 27-25 after back-to-back kills by Ibarra. A 7-2 run midway through the set was the highlight of the second. Vargas had two kills and Richie Diedrich had an ace.
The third set was controlled by Purdue Fort Wayne while they hit .467. The Mastodons used several mini-runs to develop a lead enough for the set. A 4-0 stretch late put the 'Dons up 21-13 after Ibarra got a kill from Troy Gooch.
Gooch had 11 digs to pace the Mastodon defense.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 2-2 (2-2 MIVA) while Quincy falls to 3-4 (0-4 MIVA). The 'Dons are back in action Friday (Feb. 19) at 8 p.m. against the Lewis Flyers.
