ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team came up short in their attempt to get a road Horizon League win on Tuesday (February 16) evening at Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies defeated the Mastodons 2-1 with all three goals coming in the second half.
First Half
The Mastodons earned a great chance in the 14th minute. Logan Lee took a feed just a few feet in front of the goal but his quick shot was stopped by the Oakland keeper.
Ali Nasser had a nice look on a free kick later in the half for the 'Dons, but his shot went high.
The Golden Grizzlies had the majority of the possession in the first half but never found the back of the net. Erik Josson picked up two saves in the first 45 minutes for the 'Dons.
Second Half
The pace opened up in the second half and the Golden Grizzlies were the first to benefit. Oakland's Ville Ahola scored in the 65th minute assisted by Owen Smith. Then Dylan Borczek followed with a goal in the 71st minute, assisted by Dawsun Schrum.
It was a 2-0 game when the 'Dons picked up a penalty kick in the 78th minute. But Lee's attempt to cut the deficit in half was stopped. It wasn't the only saved penalty kick in the half. A minute and a half later Oakland earned a penalty kick but Josson stopped it with his left hand.
Down a pair of goals, it looked like it would end up a 2-0 final score. But then with 90 seconds left in the match Romario Simpson delivered a pass 70 yards from the goal. Lee chased it down at the edge of the 18 and headed it into the goal just before the Oakland goalkeeper could knock the pass away.
The goal was Lee's first of the season.
The 'Dons held Oakland to a season-low 12 shots. The Golden Grizzlies had 22 and 18 shots, respectively, in their first two matches. The 'Dons recorded five shots on Tuesday night.
Oakland improves to 2-0-1 (2-0-1 Horizon League). The 'Dons fall to 0-2-0 (0-2-0 Horizon League). The 'Dons are at IUPUI next Monday.
