Men’s Soccer Earns First Horizon League Win With Shutout of Rival IUPUI
2/22/2021 4:38:00 PM | Men's Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS – The Purdue Fort Wayne defense allowed only three shots on goal on Monday (Feb. 22) afternoon and it helped power the Mastodons to a 2-0 men's soccer victory at IUPUI.
First Half
The Mastodons went up early when Logan Lee scored his first of two goals in the game. The Fort Wayne native scored in the fifth minute on a tally assisted by Nemanja Gvozdic. Lee finished with his left foot on a pass from Gvozdic that went through a crowded box and found Lee only a few feet in front of the goal.
The 'Dons earned another nice chance in the 18th minute when Ali Nasser's diving header was saved by the IUPUI goalkeeper Quinn McCallion.
IUPUI had the majority of shots in the first half, but most of them missed the frame. One of their best chances was a header by Corey Goede in the 25th minute off a corner kick.
Mastodon goalkeeper Erik Josson kept the IUPUI offense at bay, and that included an IUPUI pass in the box he jumped on with five minutes left in the half.
Second Half
The 'Dons held the majority of the possession in the second half but it wasn't a precise attack that scored the Mastodons' second goal. Instead it was Lee picking the pocket of the IUPUI goalkeeper as McCallion possessed the ball 12 yards from the goal. Once Lee had the ball all he had to do was make some space and shoot it in the net. Lee now has three goals on the season.
Down two, IUPUI earned the majority of the chances the rest of the way but never seriously threatened to knot the game up. Josson picked up two of his three saves in the game in the final 15 minutes.
Notes:
- The win earned head coach Stephen Gorton his first win as Mastodon head coach.
- The 'Dons held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal
- The 'Dons led 8-3 in corner kicks.
- The game featured only 17 combined fouls.
- It was the first career shutout for the freshman goalkeeper Erik Josson.
- IUPUI falls to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 Horizon League). The 'Dons improve to 1-2-0 (1-2-0 Horizon League).
