Mastodons Drop 2021 Opener at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - After 332 days of no matches, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell to No. 15 Ball State 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20) at Worthen Arena on Friday (Feb. 5).
Set One
The Cardinals took an early lead 2-1 in the first set after a kill by Blake Reardon. Frederico Santos and Richie Diedrich answered to Ball State with a block, but couldn't keep the momentum going. Ball State took control and made the lead 7-2 after an ace by Kaleb Jenness. Even after three two-point runs by the Mastodons, Ball State claimed the first set 25-22. Jon Deidrich had four kills in set one, while Bryce Walker and Pelegrin Vargas contributed one kill apiece.
Set Two
In set two, the 'Dons found their rhythm and took off with a 3-1 lead over the Cardinals after a kill by Walker and Jon Diedrich. The momentum didn't stop there when the Mastodons went on a four-point run, taking their biggest lead of the set at 17-11. Vargas collect two back-to-back kills and Mitch Geiger added a kill and an ace. Ball State attempted to close the gap after Reardon had a kill, bringing the score to be 21-20, but Vargas shut down set two with a kill between the Cardinal block.
Set Three
The 'Dons began set three with another four-point run after Vargas and Santos both had kills, making the score 5-2. The lead was short lived when the Cardinals went on a run to go up 14-12. It was back-and-forth until Vargas and Walker blocked Ball State and tied up the score at 19. The Cardinals took the final six points of the set.
Set Four
Jon Diedrich answered Ball State's 2-0 start with an ace to tie the score at two. Vargas added a kill and Richie Diedrich contributed an ace, taking the lead 6-5. A 3-0 run from BSU to go up 22-16 was enough distance to hold Purdue Fort Wayne at arm's length. Santos and Richie Diedrich had two blocks and Vargas had three kills in the third set.
