Mastodons' Offense Leads to 3-1 Victory Over Buckeyes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After hitting .490 as a team, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team defeated Ohio State 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20) on Saturday (March 20) afternoon on Arnie Ball Court.
Set One
Set one was all Purdue Fort Wayne from the start. The 'Dons took an early lead 8-4. Ohio State caught up after a kill by Sotiris Siapanis, tying up the set at 13. It didn't take long for the Mastodons to get control back, however. An untimely service error by the Buckeyes ended the first set at 25-23. There was only one attack error between the two teams in the first set. OSU hit .679 and the 'Dons hit .556. The difference came on seven Buckeye service errors.
Set Two
The Mastodons kept close in set two, but it wasn't until a service ace by Pelegrin Vargas for Purdue Fort Wayne to take the lead 18-17. Ohio State tied up the set at 19 after a kill by Siapanis. Vicente Ibarra launched the 'Dons into a three-point lead after two straight kills and Purdue Fort Wayne closed out the set 25-22 after a kill from Richie Diedrich.
Set Three
Purdue Fort Wayne kicked off set three with a five-point run highlighted by a service ace from Sean Califf and two kills by Jon Diedrich, taking the lead 10-7. Ibarra recorded a kill at 14-10 to extend the lead further. The Buckeyes found their rhythm late in the set and ended the set on a 4-0 run.
Set Four
After a service error by the Buckeyes and a kill by Richie Diedrich, set four was going the Mastodons' way at 9-7. Purdue Fort Wayne went on a three-point run to secure the lead 23-17 when Pelegrin Vargas sent the ball past Ohio State's defense for a kill. Siapanis tried to get Ohio State back in the game with a kill, but Richie Diedrich answered back with a kill of his own and the Mastodons won 25-20.
Purdue Fort Wayne Individual Stats
Jon Diedrich hit .636 and tallied 24 kills.
Pelegrin Vargas and Vicente Ibarra earned 12 kills apiece.
Sean Califf had a career-high 53 assists.
Ohio State Individual Stats
Sotiris Siapanis had 20 kills and hit .515.
Michael Wright had 50 assists and two digs.
Martin Lallemand recorded 14 kills on .407 hitting.
Notes
Ohio State had a hitting percentage of .465, while the 'Dons hit .490.
This was the first time since February 7, 2020 against Urbana that the 'Dons hit over .400.
The Mastodons had 37 kills.
Jon Diedrich ended the weekend with 38 kills and hit over .600 two days in a row.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to a record of 4-6 (4-6 MIVA) and the Buckeyes will drop to 6-8 (5-5 MIVA). The 'Dons will return to Arnie Ball Court on Saturday (March 27) and Sunday (March 28) and host No. 8 McKendree. Saturday's match will begin at 6 p.m. and Sunday will start at 2 p.m. Sunday's match will serve as senior day for the Mastodons.
