Mastodons Ahead of Five Horizon League Programs Through 36 Holes

SPRINGBORO, Ohio - In the week prior to the Horizon League Championship, nine of the 10 men's golf programs in the League met at the Wright State Invitational to compete for another trophy. The Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team finished the first 36 holes ahead of five of them after shooting 298-305-603 as a team. Overall, the team is in a tie for sixth in the 17-team field.
The Mastodons only trailed Wright State (579), Youngstown State (594) and Green Bay (600). With 18 to play, the 'Dons are ahead of Northern Kentucky (606), Cleveland State (608), IUPUI (610), Detroit Mercy (617) and Robert Morris (623).
Kasey Lilly carded 75-73-148 to tie for 13th with 18 to play. In his first round, he birdied the fourth, then capped off the front nine with another birdie. In his second, he eagled the fourth with a three on the 553-yard hole. He had 14 pars in round two.
Luke Miller shot 75-74-149 with four birdies in his opening round. En route to tying for 18th, he birdied holes four, seven, 11 and 14 in his first trip through the course. In the second round, he started with a birdie on 15, then saw another put drop for birdie on hole nine. He had seven straight pars on the front nine.
Parker Deakyne shot 74-79-153 on his opening day. He tied for 39th. He had two birdies in his first round, the first of which came on the 553-yard par-5 fourth. Six holes later, he birdied the 440-yard 10th hole. On the back nine, he had no bogeys from the 14th to the 18th. On his second time through, he birdied holes four and 11.
Burke Pitz shot 77-79-156 to tie for 53rd. Pitz had three birdies on the front nine in his first round, coming on holes two, four and seven. He finished his first round by parring five of his last six holes. He birdied six on his second time around.
Jacob Deakyne turned in a 74-84-158 to tie for 62nd. His first round was highlighted by an eagle and three birdies. His eagle came on the fourth hole, the same his brother birdied. He followed it up with a birdie on five and another on eight. After his 2-under front nine, he birdied 11. He had nine pars in his second round.
Wright State's Austin Schoonmaker is the individual leader through two rounds with a 137. The Raiders lead the field with a 579 team score.
The final 18 holes of the Wright State Invitational will be played tomorrow (Monday, April 19).
