MVB Falls to Lindenwood 3-2 in Final Regular Season Match

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Purdue Fort Wayne rallied back to take sets three and four, but couldn't complete the comeback at Lindenwood on Saturday (April 3) afternoon in a 3-2 (28-26, 25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 15-12) loss at Robert F. Hyland Arena in the final contest of the regular season.
Set One
Lindenwood had an early 7-4 lead but a kill by Vicente Ibarra tied the score at 10. The Mastodons took the lead 22-21 after a Lions attack error and a block solo by Frederico Santos. It remained close and headed into extra points, but Lindenwood came out victorious 28-26.
Set Two
Lindenwood out-hit Purdue Fort Wayne .409 to .320 to take the second set.
Set Three
The Mastodons hit the ground running in set three. Purdue Fort Wayne had a three-point run after back-to-back attack errors by the Lions, making the score 19-14. It was Purdue Fort Wayne the rest of the way and two more Lion errors finished set three with a Mastodon victory 25-21.
Set Four
Purdue Fort Wayne rallied back from a 23-21 deficit to force a fifth set. Lindenwood had match point at 24-23, but a service error made it a 24-all game. It would be their only match point of the fourth set. Ibarra and Tomas Gago teamed on a double block for point 27
Set Five
The set was led by Purdue Fort Wayne in the beginning with the lead in their favor 5-2. It wasn't long until Lindenwood tied up at the set 8-8 with an ace. Ibarra helped the 'Dons lead once again 9-8, but it didn't last long. After a kill by Negron, the Lions finished out set five 15-12.
Purdue Fort Wayne Individual Stats
Vicente Ibarra collected 20 kills and hit .256.
Sean Califf earned 27 assists with seven digs.
Troy Gooch had a career-high 15 digs.
Lindenwood Individual Stats
Diego Negron earned a double-double with 21 kills and 11 digs.
Brian Schwob also had a double-double with 49 assists and 12 digs.
A.J. Lewis recorded 19 kills.
Notes
The Mastodons hit .210 compared to Lindenwood's .246.
Vicente Ibarra had Purdue Fort Wayne's only ace.
Tomas Gago led with five blocks.
