ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team closed the 2021 season on Sunday (May 9) morning with a pair of one-run losses to Oakland 2-1 and 3-2.
Game One – Oakland 2, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
The opening contest was played in a blistering pace, taking about an hour and a half for the full seven innings. Oakland got on the board first when Lauren Griffith doubled in Madison Jones in the first inning.
It stayed a 1-0 game until the sixth when the 'Dons loaded the bases. Olivia Stansbury drove in Madeline Swart to tie the game.
Jones won the game in the seventh for Oakland with a walk-off fielder's choice.
Mastodon starter Lauren McConnell threw well despite earning the loss. She allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings.
Sydney Campbell earned the win, going all 7.0 innings.
Swart, Meagan Mullaney, Kyndell Ethridge and Lexi Smalarz each finished with singles for the 'Dons.
Game Two – Oakland 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
Morganne Denny hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the Mastodons a 1-0 lead. Denny ranks seventh in program history for single season home runs with eight in 2021. Her 21 career home runs put her in a tie for sixth in program history. Denny finishes with 90 RBIs in her career, sixth most in program history.
All three of Oakland's runs came in the fifth. Jen Krizka recorded a two-run home run to put the Golden Grizzlies up. Jamie Squires then doubled in a run later in the inning.
Kennedy Steele tripled home Alise Hale in the sixth to make it a 3-2 game.
The Mastodons' last chance to tie the game in the seventh started well, with Rachel Everson hitting a single up the middle to open the frame. However, three straight outs followed to close the contest.
Jadelyn Johnson (3-6) gave up three runs (two earned) in 6.0 innings to get the loss. Chelsea Wiggins finished with a complete game win to move her record to 4-5 for the Golden Grizzlies.
