The Mastodons are coming off a 3-1 win against Morehead State on Sunday, Aug. 22. The Mastodons 1-0-1 record is the best start to a season in program history through two matches. Morgan Reitano, Mackenzie Evans and Megan Sinnott each scored a goal for the 'Dons in the win. Kelsey Gallagher had two assists and Gigi Riccicardi added an assist as well. In 191 minutes in net, Samantha Castaneda had 12 saves and allowed one goal.
One of the key reasons for the Mastodons' hot start is the impact of the freshman class. Student-athletes such as Ricciardi, Kayla Shebar, Marisa Metzger and Bella Reitano have all played significant minutes to start the season and played a big role in the 'Dons start to the season.
The sister duo of Morgan and Bella Reitano had a big impact on the 'Dons two exhibition matches earlier this season. The two combined for three goals and one assist.
Scouting The Panthers
EIU comes into Friday's match with a 1-1 record. The Panthers dropped its first game of the season to Indiana State by a score of 3-1 but won the following match against the University of Illinois Springfield, a Division II opponent, 3-0. Nicoletta Anuci leads the Panthers in goals (2) and points (5), and is tied for second in shots (5) shots on goal (2) and assists (1).
Jake Plant enters his fourth year as the EIU head coach with an overall record of 13-26-11.
Scouting The Knights
The Knights enter the week with a 0-0-1 record after a 1-1 double OT tie to the University of Evansville. Before Sundays game, the Knights will face Horizon League member Wright State on Thursday, Aug. 26. The 2020-21 season marked the first regular season in Division I for Bellarmine where it went 2-6-3.
Prior to its time in Division I, the Knights played in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Chris Tinius enters his eighth year as the head coach of Bellarmine. He owns a record of 75-31-26 overall (73-25-22 at the Division II level).
Up Next
