Women's Soccer Ties Non-League Match Against Eastern Illinois

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team finished its match against Eastern Illinois with a 0-0 draw on Friday, Aug. 27 at the Hefner Soccer Complex. With the tie, the Mastodons' unbeaten streak goes to three games as they move to 1-0-2 on the season.
After a close first half, the 'Dons had several chances to score the game's first goal. Megan Sinnott applied pressure early with a shot within 20 seconds of the start of the second half, however, the shot was saved by EIU goalkeeper Faith Davies. In the 71st minute of the game, Kelsey Gallagher would find Bella Reitano who headed the ball towards the goal, but it would roll out to the left of the net. In the 82nd minute of the game, Zoe Greenhalge put a shot on goal towards the top of the net, but it was punched up and over net by Davies, resulting in a corner kick. Moments later, off the corner, Rylee Vruggink would put a shot on goal, which was saved by Davies. The 'Dons would keep the pressure up in overtime and had six shots in both overtime periods, none of which were on goal. The 'Dons finished the second half with a 15-2 shot advantage and had a 6-0 shot advantage between the two overtime periods.
On the day, the Mastodons outshot the Panthers 28-7 and had a 10-3 shots on goal advantage. Vruggink and Sinnott led the way in shots. Vruggink finished with five shots and Sinnott had four. Both players had two shots on goal each. Kayla Shebar and Gallagher would also add three shots each. One of Shebar's three shots was on goal. In goal for the 'Dons was Samantha Castaneda, she had three saves on the day and earned her second shutout of the season. EIU's Davies made a career high 10 saves.
Eastern Illinois moves to 1-1-1.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 29 (1 p.m.) for a game against Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. Bellarmine is 0-0-2 and is coming off a 1-1 tie against Horizon League foe Wright State.
