Oakland Hands Mastodons 2-0 Setback in League Opener

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Purdue Fort Wayne dropped the 2021 Horizon League men's soccer opener on Saturday (Sept. 11) to Oakland 2-0. It was a one-goal game for the majority of the contest before a goal in the final 10 minutes by the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland finished with six shots on goal. Erik Josson earned two saves. The Mastodons had a pair of team saves in the second half to account for the other two saves.
Alejandro Lopez, after scoring his first Mastodon goal last week, led the 'Dons in shots on Saturday with three. He had one shot on goal. Michael Teller also added a shot on goal. Logan Lee picked up two shots in reserve action.
The 'Dons had a flurry of action in the 29th minute when three shots were blocked in the box.
The Golden Grizzlies went up 1-0 on a goal in the 32nd minute. Ville Ahola scored on an assist from Noah Jensen. Oakland's final score came in the 84th minute. Mike Ketteman put the ball in the left side of the goal. Oakland earned a penalty kick in the 70th minute but the shot went wide. It is the third time this season a Mastodon opponent has failed to score on a penalty kick.
Oakland improves to 1-2-1 (1-0-0 Horizon). The 'Dons fall to 2-3-0 (0-1-0 Horizon). Purdue Fort Wayne steps out of league play on Tuesday (Sept. 14) when they travel to Western Michigan to face the Broncos.
