Mefford and Seward Lead Mastodons on Day One in West Virginia

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After 36 holes on the opening day of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, Hunter Mefford and Brett Seward of the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team finished with the same score of 149.
In his second collegiate tournament, Mefford had a bogey-free front nine in his first round. He turned in a birdie on the 423-yard par-4 fifth hole to shoot 35 on the front. He finished his first round with a 74, which featured 13 pars and the birdie on the fifth. After making the turn for his second 18, he birdied hole five again and knocked in a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole. Mefford concluded his day with a score of 74-75-149 to tie for 51st with Seward.
After a difficult first 18 holes, Seward's second round featured four birdies on the front nine. He got birdies on 17, his starting hole, and on holes one, three, six and eight. He had a 1-under front nine and a 1-under back nine. His back nine was bogey-free. He finished the day with an 80-69-149 to tie with Mefford.
Kasey Lilly recorded 13 pars in his opening round, including 10 in a row. In his second round, he birdied the fifth hole and had seven pars on the front nine. The junior had eight pars on the back for a 77-73-150.
Using solid scores on the back nine, Tyler Green finished with a 74-76-150. In his first round, he had birdies on eight and 13 with 11 pars. In the afternoon round, Green had six pars on the back nine with another birdie on 13.
Luke Miller had his score taken on the first 18 holes, when he turned in a 71 thanks to four birdies on the front nine and eight pars on the back. In his second round, he recorded nine pars. He shot a 71-80-151 for 66th place.
Reece Compton competed as an individual, turning in a 73-78-151 to tie with Miller for 66th.
After finishing the first round in 14th place, the Mastodons jumped Cleveland State, Robert Morris and Mount St. Mary's with a second-round 293. The 'Dons have a two-round total of 589 and are tied with Stetson. The host school, Marshall, is leading the field with a 558 (-10). Northern Kentucky's Miles Parroco is leading all individuals at 133 (-9).
The third and final round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational will start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 14).
