Mastodons Prepare For Home Opener Against Maryville

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team plays its home opener against Maryville on Friday, Jan. 14 (7 p.m.) at the Arnie Ball Court in the Gates Sports Center.

Know Your Foe
Maryville is set to compete in its first collegiate matches in program history this week. The Saints lost to No. 8 Lewis 3-0 on Tuesday, Jan. 11 in Romeoville, Ill. Maryville will also play Ball State on Thursday, Jan. 13 in Muncie, Ind. The Saints' squad includes 19 athletes, 10 of which are freshman. Mason Mortimer led the Saints in Tuesday's loss against Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe Lewis with five kills and two aces. Cameron Chambers led the Saints in assists with eight.
Mike Haston is the head coach of the Saints. He previously was the head coach at Fontbonne University from 2013-2021. He was an assistant for the Saints DII women's volleyball season for four seasons prior to his time at Fontbonne. He left Fontbonne as the programs all-time winningest coach (116-101), which includes a 50-17 record over the last three seasons.
Player of the Week
The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced Purdue Fort Wayne libero Troy Gooch was awarded Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Jan 11.
Gooch led the Mastodons in digs with 11 (1.83 digs per set) en route to a 1-1 weekend with a win over King on Friday, Jan. 7 in Bristol, Tenn. In Friday's win, Gooch racked up seven digs, which resulted in the 'Dons hitting .403 on offense.
Home Openers
Under head coach Ryan Perrotte, the Mastodons own a 5-1 record in home openers. They have won the last four home openers. The last time the 'Dons lost a home opener under Perrotte was back on Jan. 13, 2017 against Saint Francis (PA). Since 2012, the 'Dons are 8-2 in home openers, with both losses coming at the hands on Saint Francis.
