1/8/2022 8:43:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team lost to Lincoln Memorial in three sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-14) on Saturday, Jan. 8.
With a loss, the 'Dons finish the first weekend of the season with a 1-1 record. Saturday's match was the first time the 'Dons faced off against the Railsplitters in program history.
The match started off with a close first set, neither team led by more than two points. After Zach Solomon's service ace gave the 'Dons a 20-18 lead, the Railsplitters finished the set with a 7-4 run to take the first set.
After the Railsplitters took a 16-12 lead in the second set, the 'Dons would rally back with a 6-3 run to bring them within one point. The run included kills from Jon Diedrich and Kade Bontrager, and blocks from Sean Califf, Mark Frazier, and Bontrager.
However, the Railsplitters would end the set on a 6-3 run, and use that momentum to win the third set.
On the night, the 'Dons hit .095 compared to LMU's .438 hit percentage. Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 14, along with a .226 hitting percentage. Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 20. Diedrich, Bontrager, and Troy Gooch each had four of the Mastodons' 15 total digs.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 14 (7 p.m.) against Maryville. The Saints have matches against Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foes Lewis and Ball State before heading to Fort Wayne.
