Mefford Top-10, 'Dons in Second at TVA CU Invitational

KILLEN, Ala. - Hunter Mefford of the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team shot a team-best 71-74-145 on the first day of the TVA Community Credit Union Invitational on Monday (Oct. 17). Mefford is in seventh place, just three shots off the lead, with 18 holes to play.
Purdue Fort Wayne is tied for second place with Arkansas-Pine Bluff after 36 holes at the Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club, firing 297-299-596. The Mastodons' 297 was the best opening round in the field.
Mefford had the fourth-best opening round of the morning. Two pars and a bogey started off the round, but the senior had a 2-under and bogey-free back nine. He birdied 11 and 17. He dropped in another birdie on four after making the turn. In round two, he stayed under par with eight more bogey-free holes, including a birdie on 11. Mefford finished 1-over after birdieing hole five.
Burke Pitz had his seventh-career round at par or better with an even 72 in the morning. His second round was a 77, pushing his total to 149 for 14th. In the morning, Pitz had a bogey-free back nine with two birdies on 14 and 16 after birdieing eight. He had 12 pars in his first 18, then 13 in his second.
Kasey Lilly shot 77-73-150 and is in 17th place. He had eight pars on the front nine in round one to go with five on the back. Lilly shot up the leaderboard in round two. After starting 3-over in the first six holes, Lilly rattled off three birdies in a row on 11, 12 and 13. Then he dropped in four pars and another birdie on 18 to move to 1-under for the round.
Jadden Ousley turned in 77-79-156 to tie for 38th place with Nick Holder. He had four pars in a six-hole stretch to start before dropping in birdies on 14, 15 and 17. He had another birdie on hole seven, his closing hole, to cap off round one. He had 11 pars in round two.
From the No. 5 spot, Holder recorded 80-76-156. He had a birdie on the 378-yard 14th in round one. In his second, he birdied five, seven and 18. On the back, he had five-straight pars before his birdie on 18.
Reece Compton played as an individual, turning in a 76-79-155. He had four birdies on the day and is tied for 34th.
The host, North Alabama, is leading the way with a team score of 585. Carter Goodwin (North Alabama) and Alejandro Pedryc (Mississippi State) are tied for the individual race at 142.
The final round of the event will tee off on Tuesday morning (Oct. 18).
