Bromenschenkel Continues to Shine as Mastodons Beat Bellarmine
11/13/2022 5:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Amellia Bromenschenkel scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting in Purdue Fort Wayne's 73-62 win over Bellarmine on Sunday (Nov. 13).
The junior guard did most of her damage in the first three quarters, as she had 23 points before the final frame.
Bromenschenkel got most of the attention on the offensive end, but Purdue Fort Wayne's defense was locking down Bellarmine. The Mastodons forced 30 turnovers, which was the most in a game against a Division I opponent since forcing Centenary into 35 TOs on February 6, 2010. The 'Dons scored 33 points off Bellarmine turnovers.
After the Mastodons fell behind 25-15 in the second quarter, they came storming back, rattling off 13 unanswered points to take the lead. They only trailed once from that point, at 33-32 in the third quarter. The Mastodons used Bromenschenkel to blitz the Knights as she went 4-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from 3-point range for 10 points in the third quarter alone.
Ten seconds into the fourth, Bellarmine tied it at 49, but the 'Dons scored nine-straight with a pair of 3-pointers from Audra Emmerson, a free throw from Bromenschenkel and a bucket from Shayla Sellers. After an old-fashioned 3-point play for Bellarmine, Ryin Ott quieted the Knight bench with a triple of her own. The Mastodons put the Knights away for good when Bellarmine was assessed a technical foul, Ott converted the free throws, then Sellers hit a jumper on the next possession to go up 15.
Ott had a season-high 14 points to pair with Bromenschenkel's 26. Sellers added 10. Ott also led the team with five rebounds. The Mastodons shot 44 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-25), including 4-for-8 in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 2-1 while Bellarmine falls to 0-2. The Mastodons are at home again on Thursday (Nov. 17) when they host Chicago State. The Cougars have two games between now and then.
