
Trio of Mastodons Pick up #HLXC Academic Honors

INDIANAPOLIS - The Horizon League announced its #HLXC All-Academic Team on Thursday (Nov. 17) and Purdue Fort Wayne earned three spots. Nicholas Mills (Columbia City, Ind. / Columbia City HS) was named to the Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team, while Nathan Mills (Columbia City, Ind. / Columbia City HS) and Andrew Whitinger (New Castle, Ind. / Blue River Valley) picked up Honorable Mention honors. The trio helped the 'Dons earn third place at the 2022 league championship, the best finish in program history at a conference meet.
To qualify for the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must:
• Participate in 50% of the team's overall contests to be eligible for postseason awards.
• Have completed one (1) year at the member school (excluding summer school) and passed 24 semester (or 36 quarter) credit hours at that institution. Eligible candidates must have completed one academic year prior to the start of their athletic season.
• Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.
The Honorable Mention Team is for student-athletes who received at least 25 percent of votes, but did not make the All-Academic Team.
Nicholas Mills was second on the team at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 25:51.1. He is an accounting major with a 3.94 GPA. He earns the Academic All-League accolade after being an honorable mention pick last season.
Nathan Mills was 24th overall at the Horizon League Championships, finishing in 25:58.1. He is a actuarial science major with a 3.93 GPA. This is also his second academic award from the Horizon League. Last season he was an Academic All-League selection.
Whitinger earned All-League Second Team honors with a 10th place finish at the Horizon League Championships (25:14.9). He earned the program's best ever individual finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (64th). This is his second career honorable mention accolade. He is a marketing major with a 3.27 GPA.
