Men's Volleyball Win Streak Extends to Four with Win Over Quincy

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up its second straight Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association win with a victory over Quincy in straight sets (25-18, 27-25, 25-22) on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Gates Sports Center on the Arnie Ball Court.
With the win, the Mastodons' overall record improves 8-4 and 2-0 in the MIVA. Quincy drops to 3-5 and 0-2 in MIVA play.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .316 percent compared to Quincy's .217 hitting percentage. This is the sixth time in 12 matches the 'Dons have hit over. 300 as a team.
Jon Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 19 and hit .444 percent. Over the last two matches, Diedrich has 33 kills in 57 attempts and hit .509 percent.
Sean Califf led in assists with 35. Troy Gooch led in digs with 11 and added seven assists.
The 'Dons got off to a fast start leading by as much as 9-3 to start the first set. In that stretch, Diedrich had four kills, and Vicente Ibarra had a service ace. The Hawks cut the 'Dons lead to 16-12, however, the 'Dons finished on a 9-6 run to win the set.
In the second set, neither team led by more than two points. The 'Dons found themselves down 25-24, and scored the final three points to win the second set. Diedrich had a kill to tie the set at 25-25 and Rico Wardlow won the set with back to back service aces.
The 'Dons got off to another fast start in the third set, leading by as much as 9-4. In that run, the 'Dons received two kills from Ibarra, and a kill and an ace from Bryce Walker. The Hawks clawed their way back into the set, eventually tying it at 22-22. However, the 'Dons scored the final three points off a Diedrich kill and two Quincy attacking errors to win the match.
MIVA play continues for the Mastodons next week with two road matches. The 'Dons travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State (7 p.m.). Following Thursday's match, the 'Dons travel to Columbus, Ohio to play Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 20 (3 p.m.).
