'Dons Fall In Heartbreaking Five Set Match Against No. 7 Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team lost a heartbreaking five set match against Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe No. 7 Ball State (25-21, 26-28, 23-25, 25-20, 15-6) on Thursday, Feb. 17.
With the loss, the Mastodons drop to 8-5 (2-1 MIVA). It also snaps their four-match win streak. Ball State's record improves to 9-1 (3-0 MIVA).
After winning the first set, Ball State found themselves up by 23-18 late in the second set. The 'Dons put the pressure on the Cardinals and won the set off a 9-3 run. In that run, Jon Diedrich had three kills, Bryce Walker and Rico Wardlow added kills, and Vicente Ibarra had a service ace.
In the third set, neither team led by more than two points for the entire set. After a Ball State kill cut the Mastodons' lead to 23-22, the 'Dons scored two of the final three points to win the set thanks to kills from Ibarra and Diedrich.
The fourth set was another close set one. Bryce Walker tied the set at 17-17 with a kill. Following Walker's kill, Ball State finished the set on an 8-3 run. The Cardinals used that momentum and won the fifth set.
On the match, the 'Dons hit .320, hitting over .300 for a third straight contest. Ball State hit .407 percent for the match, which is the seventh time this season the Cardinals have hit over .400. Kaleb Jenness led Ball State with 31 kills.
Walker led the 'Dons in kills with 17 and hit for a team-high .441 attack percentage. Walker was one of three 'Dons with 10 or more kills along with Ibarra (14) and Diedrich (13).
Sean Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 50. This is the second time this season Califf had 50 or more assists. Troy Gooch and Ibarra led in digs with 10.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20 (3 p.m.) for a MIVA match against No. 14 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
