Mastodons Drop Match Against No. 14 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team lost a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match at No. 14 Ohio State in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) on Sunday, Feb. 20.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 8-6 overall (2-2 MIVA). Ohio State's overall record improves to 5-6 (1-3 MIVA).
The 'Dons were down early by as much as 19-13. After a timeout, the 'Dons went on a 6-3 run to cut the Buckeyes lead down to 22-19. However, Ohio State scored three of the last five points to finish and win the first set.
After Ohio State won the second set 25-18, the 'Dons got off to a lead as large as 14-9 in the third. In that stretch, the 'Dons received kills from Vicente Ibarra, Jon Diedrich, Rico Wardlow, and service aces from Bryce Walker and Zach Solomon. The Buckeyes didn't go down without a fight and went on an 11-4 run to take a 20-18 lead. Despite being down, the 'Dons kept the set close, and earned kills from Wardlow, Ibarra, and Diedrich. However, the Buckeyes won the set off a Mastodon serving error.
As a team, the 'Dons .144 while the Buckeyes hit .337. Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 13 and hit .235. Sean Califf and Solomon split time at setter. Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 14, Solomon added 10. Troy Gooch and Diedrich each had five digs.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 26 (8 p.m.) when the 'Dons take on Lewis in Romeoville, Ill.
