2/24/2022 10:24:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association win against No. 10 Lewis in straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) on Thursday, Feb. 24.
The win snapped a 15-match losing streak against the Flyers. It was a streak dating back to Feb. 20, 2014. It is also the first time the 'Dons defeated the Flyers in Romeoville since April 8, 2011. The Flyers were picked to finish second in the MIVA Preseason Poll this year.
After the Flyers got off to an early 13-11 lead in the first set, the 'Dons immediately responded with a 7-3 run. The 'Dons and Flyers eventually found themselves tied at 23-23. The 'Dons scored the final two points thanks to a Jon Diedrich service ace and a Lewis attacking error to win the set.
In the second set, the 'Dons led by as much as 10-3 to start. During that stretch, the 'Dons received kills from Rico Wardlow, Zach Solomon, Diedrich, and Bryce Walker. The Flyers propelled their way back into the set, and cut the Mastodons' lead down to 24-23. But, a block from Solomon and Wardlow secured the set win for the 'Dons.
Neither team led by more than two points to start the third set. After the Flyers tied the set at 14-14, the 'Dons went on an 8-4 run and led 22-18. In that run, Solomon had two kills, and Walker had a service ace. The run proved to be too much for the Flyers, and they could not mount a comeback.
On the night, the 'Dons hit .242, including a .308 hitting percentage in the third set.
The 'Dons held Lewis to a season-low .159 hitting percentage. It is the first time the Flyers have been held under .200 this season.
Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 12, Sean Califf led in assists with 27. Troy Gooch and Solomon led in digs with eight.
The Mastodons' overall record improves to 9-6 (3-2 MIVA). The Flyers drop to 8-5 overall (2-3 MIVA).
The 'Dons will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 26 (6 p.m.) for a home match against McKendree at the Gates Sports Center on Arnie Ball Court.
