'Dons Win Five-Set Marathon Over McKendree
2/26/2022 9:05:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fought out a five-set win (25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 24-26, 15-12) over the McKendree Bearcats on Saturday (Feb. 6) in the Gates Sports Center.
Four Mastodons had at least 12 kills: Vicente Ibarra (22), Zach Solomon (12), Jon Diedrich (12) and Rico Wardlow (12). Wardlow's came on a scorching .786 hitting clip. Bryce Walker finished with a match-high seven blocks.
In the opening set, the Mastodons never trailed after the 2-1 mark. Ibarra had five kills, including the one that ended the frame. The 'Dons had two blocks in a 3-0 push late in the set to create a 5-point edge that was enough to nurse the rest of the way.
The 'Dons were down 10-5 to start the second set, but went on a 5-0 run behind Ibarra's service to scrape all the way back. The two squads traded points and mini-runs until a 21-all stymie, but the 'Dons rattled off three-straight with a Bearcat error, a block and an ace. Ibarra picked up his 10th kill on the set point.
Despite leading 24-23 after a late 5-1 run, the Mastodons could not close out the set, with McKendree outscoring the 'Dons 4-1 from that point.
McKendree even the match at two sets each by coming back from down 24-20. The Bearcats took the last six points of the set.
It seemed as though the momentum had entirely shifted to McKendree, as the Bearcats took a 5-2 lead to start the fifth. The Mastodons, however, rattled off five in a row to go up 7-5. The two squads traded back and forth until 11-all, then the 'Dons closed the match on a 4-1 run. These four points came on four kills from Solomon (2), Walker (1) and Ibarra (1).
McKendree, on the outside edge of the AVCA Top 15 poll, falls to 7-5, 4-2 MIVA. The Mastodons improve to 10-6, 4-2. The 'Dons will hit the road to face Loyola Chicago on Friday (March 4) at 8 p.m. ET.
