Mastodons Drop MIVA Match To No. 12 Loyola Chicago

CHICAGO – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match against No. 12 Loyola Chicago in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) on Friday, March. 4.
With the loss, the Mastodons' overall record falls to 10-7 and 4-3 in the MIVA. The Ramblers' record improves to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the MIVA.
After starting the first set down 12-9, the 'Dons went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-14 lead. During that stretch, the 'Dons received kills from Vicente Ibarra, Bryce Walker, Zach Solomon and Rico Wardlow. Jon Diedrich added a service ace during the run. However, the Ramblers won the set thanks to an 11-4 run.
Despite dropping the second set, the 'Dons started the third set with an early 7-3 lead. Solomon had two kills, and an ace during that stretch. The Ramblers came back and tied the set at 11-11. Neither team was able to take a lead larger than one point until the Ramblers scored the final five points to win the third and final set.
As a team, the Mastodons' hitting percentage was .229 while the Ramblers hit .375. The 'Dons had 13 service errors to the Ramblers three.
Ibarra led the 'Dons in kills with 11 and hit .409. Sean Califf led in assists with 34, Solomon added eight. Troy Gooch led in digs with a season-high 13 for a three-set match.
The Mastodons will play two non-conference matchups next weekend. The 'Dons travel to Charleston, W.Va. to play against Charleston on Friday, March 11 (7 p.m.). Following Friday's match, the 'Dons travel to Wilberforce, Ohio for a match against Central State on Saturday, March 12.
