Mastodons Pick Up Non-Conference Win Against Charleston (WV)

CHARLESTON, W.VA. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team earned a non-conference win against Charleston (WV) in straight sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) on Friday, March 11.
With the win, the Mastodons' overall record improves to 11-7. Charleston falls to 5-8 overall.
In the first set, Charleston led by as much as 11-7. The 'Dons used a 10-5 run to retake the lead at 17-16. During that run, the 'Dons received two kills from Zach Solomon and Jon Diedrich, as well as service aces from Rico Wardlow and Solomon. The 'Dons scored eight of the last 13 points to win the set.
The 'Dons found themselves leading 12-8 to begin the second set. The Golden Eagles rallied back and took a 18-16 lead. With the score tied at 21-21, the 'Dons scored four of the last six points to win the second set. Diedrich and Wardlow had kills and Carlos Mercado had a service ace during the stretch.
The Golden Eagles had an early 6-4 lead in the third set. However, the 'Dons took control and ended the set on a 21-9 run. In the third set, the 'Dons held the Golden Eagles to a .095 hitting percentage.
For the match, the 'Dons hit .207, including a .381 attack percentage in the third set. Charleston hit .119 for the match.
Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 10. He has double-digit kills in 16 matches this season. Wardlow added eight kills and hit a team high .500. Sean Califf led in assists with 29, Troy Gooch led in digs with a match-high seven.
The 'Dons recorded eight aces, a season high for a three-set match.
The 'Dons travel to Wilberforce, Ohio for a match against Central State on Saturday, March. 12 (5 p.m.).
