Men's Volleyball Finishes Weekend with Win Against Central State

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team won its second straight non-conference match of the weekend thanks to a win over Central State 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday, March 12.
The 'Dons held Central State to a .000 attack percentage, with 17 kills and 17 attack errors. The mark is the lowest hitting percentage the 'Dons have held an opponent to this season, and lowest since Feb. 7, 2020, when the 'Dons held Urbana to -.029.
After Central State cut the Mastodons' lead to 12-10 in the first set, the 'Dons finished the set on a 13-7 run. The 'Dons received kills from Cody Johnson, Mitch Geiger, Vicente Ibarra, Rico Wardlow, and Mark Frazier. The 'Dons also received service aces from Zach Solomon and Axel Melendez Watts during the run.
In the second set, Central State led by as much as 14-10. The 'Dons immediately responded with a 6-1 run to retake the lead 16-15. Johnson had two kills in that stretch. After Central State tied the set at 16-16, the 'Dons finished the set off with a 9-6 run.
In the beginning of the third set, the Mastodons' largest lead was 16-12. Central State cut the lead down to 20-19. The 'Dons followed by scoring the five of the final six points to win the third set. Wardlow and Melendez Watts earned kills, Geiger had a service ace, and Cody Johnson had two blocks in the final stretch.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .263, including a .403 hitting percentage in the second set.
Wardlow led the 'Dons in kills with eight and hit .600. Johnson added seven kills and hit .667.
Solomon and Sean Califf split time at setter. Califf led in assists with 16, Solomon added 13. Wilmer Hernandez led in digs with six.
With the win, the Mastodons improve to 12-7 overall. Central State drops to 5-11.
The Mastodons return home for a pair of matches next week. The 'Dons host a non-conference game against Daemen (N.Y.) on Thursday, March 17 (7 p.m.). Following Thursday's match, the 'Dons return to MIVA play with a match against No. 11 Loyola Chicago on Saturday, March 19 (5 p.m.).
