Mastodons Win Five Set Thriller Against Daemen

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team defeated Daemen in a five-set thriller (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-8) on Thursday, March 17 at the Gates Sports Center on Arnie Ball Court.
With the win, the Mastodons' overall record improves to 13-7, Daemen drops to 11-4.
With the first set tied at 6-6, the 'Dons went on a 9-4 run to take a 15-10 lead. In the run, the 'Dons received two kills from Cody Johnson, and kills from Rico Wardlow, Sean Califf and Jon Diedrich. The 'Dons used that momentum to win the first set.
In the second set, the 'Dons were down by as much as 12-7 and used a 10-5 stretch to tie it at 17-17. However, the Wildcats went on an 8-5 run to win the set.
After the Wildcats cut the Mastodons' third set lead to 21-20, the 'Dons scored four of the sets final five points. Zach Solomon had two kills, Wardlow had one kill, and Carlos Mercado had a service ace during the stretch.
The match eventually went to a fifth set. In the fifth set, the 'Dons led 8-7 when KJ Glab was put into the game to serve. With Glab serving, the 'Dons scored the next five points. The run started with a Glab service ace, the first of his career, followed by a Solomon kill, a Diedrich kill, and two block assists from Johnson. The run proved to be too much for the Wildcats.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .313. The 'Dons are 7-2 when they hit over .300 as a team. Daemen hit .238 for the match.
Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 20 and hitting percentage at .405. Califf led in assists with 48, Troy Gooch led in digs with eight.
Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play resumes for the Mastodons this weekend. The 'Dons will host Loyola Chicago on Saturday, March 19 (5 p.m.) at the Gates Sports Center on Arnie Ball Court. Loyola defeated the 'Dons in straight sets in Chicago on March 4.
