Mastodons Drop MIVA Match Against No. 11 Loyola Chicago

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match against No. 11 Loyola Chicago in four sets (26-28, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19) on Saturday, March 19 at the Gates Sports Center on Arnie Ball Court.
With the loss, the Mastodons' overall record drops to 13-8 and 4-4 in the MIVA. The Ramblers improve to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in the MIVA.
Both teams had leads to start the first set. Loyola Chicago's largest lead was 6-3, while the 'Dons led by as much as 21-17. The Ramblers went on a late 9-4 run to take a 26-25 lead. The 'Dons scored three straight points to win the set 28-26. Rico Wardlow had a kill, and the Ramblers had an attacking error and a setting error to clinch the set win.
The Ramblers started the second set with a 10-4 lead. The 'Dons fought back with a 12-5 push to take a 16-15 lead. In that stretch, Jon Diedrich had two kills, Cody Johnson and Zach Solomon added kills, and Solomon notched a service ace. With the set tied at 20-20, the Ramblers scored five of the last eight points to win the set.
Neither team led by more than three points to start the third set. With the score tied at 9-9, the Ramblers went on a 15-8 run to take a 24-17 lead. The 'Dons immediately notched three straight points but couldn't mount a comeback. The Ramblers used the momentum to win the fourth set.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .171 compared to the Ramblers' .237. The Ramblers also had 14 blocks to the Mastodons' seven and 42 digs to the Mastodons' 30.
Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 12. Coming off the bench, Mark Frazier added nine kills and hit .375. Solomon and Sean Califf split time at setter. Solomon led in assists with 20, Califf had 18 and led in digs with nine.
The Mastodons play a pair of MIVA matches next week. The 'Dons host Lewis on Thursday, March 24 and will then travel to Lebanon, Illinois to play against McKendree on Saturday, March 26 (6 p.m.).
