Miller Fans Eight in Series Opener at California Baptist
2/25/2022 11:45:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Senior Justin Miller struck out eight California Baptist hitters over 6.2 innings of work, but it was not enough as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons fell to the Lancers 4-2 on Friday (Feb. 25) in the first of a four-game series.
Miller (0-2) threw 6.2 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and walking three. Miller moved his career strikeout total to 139, entering the top 10 in program history in the statistic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
California Baptist put single runs on the board in the third and fifth and then two in the sixth. The Mastodon defense earned double plays in the sixth and eighth innings to end scoring threats for the Lancers.
The 'Dons made noise in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. Alex Evenson knocked in Jack Lang with a single to make it 4-1. A wild pitch then made it a 4-2 game with runners at second and third. However, the 'Dons couldn't get the final key hit needed to knot the game up. The Lancers were forced to make three pitching changes in the inning to quiet the threat.
