Smart Play Leads to Mastodon Win Over Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team defeated Harvard in four sets (25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20) on Saturday, Feb. 5.
With the win, the Mastodons' record improves to 6-4 overall. The Crimson's record dropped to 2-4 overall.
The 'Dons got off to a hot start in the first set. As a team, they hit .412 percent and held Harvard to a .000 hit percentage for the frame.
After Harvard took the second set, neither team led by more than two points in the third set until the Crimson went on a 4-1 run to take a 19-15 lead. Later on, despite being down 24-22 with set point on the line, the 'Dons scored four straight points to win the set. During that run, Rico Wardlow had a kill, and the Crimson had three attacking errors.
With momentum on their side, the 'Dons got off to an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set. Harvard did not go down without a fight and brought the Mastodons' lead down to 16-15. However, the 'Dons finished the set on a 9-5 run. In the run, Wardlow and Bryce Walker both had two kills each, and Davey Singer clinched the set with an ace on match point.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .318 percent for the match, which is the third highest hitting percentage for the 'Dons this season. The Crimson hit .147 as a team. Purdue Fort Wayne out-blocked Harvard 12.0 to 3.5. The 12 blocks are a season high for the 'Dons in a four-set match this season.
Wardlow led the 'Dons in kills with 10 and hit .909 percent on 11 swings with no errors. He had a match-high five block assists. Sean Califf led the 'Dons in assists with 36 and digs with eight.
Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play begins next weekend for the Mastodons. They will take on Lindenwood on Friday, Feb. 11 (8 p.m.) and Quincy on Saturday, Feb. 12 (3 p.m.) at the Gates Sports Center on the Arnie Ball Court. Both matches will be aired on the Mastodon YouTube page.
