'Dons Stay Hot in League Play With Win Over Green Bay

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball team won their 10th home game of the season thanks to a 71-55 victory over Green Bay on Sunday (Feb. 6) at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Mastodons went to work inside, finishing with a 50-32 edge in points in the paint. The 'Dons shot 3-of-12 from three. It stands as the fewest 3-pointers the 'Dons have attempted in a game since making 6-of-11 at Denver on Feb. 19, 2015.
The Mastodons held a 32-21 edge in rebounds and out-shot the Phoenix 56.9 percent (29-of-51) to 43.1 percent (22-of-51). The 55 points the Mastodons allowed stands as their best defensive performance of the season against a Division I team.
The 'Dons used a 10-0 run to take a 30-26 lead with 2:18 left in the half. Four different 'Dons had a basket in the run, including treys by Jalon Pipkins and Deonte Billups. Purdue Fort Wayne went to the break leading 35-31 with seven Mastodons recording a field goal in the first half. The 'Dons took their first double-digit lead in the second half at 50-40 on a layup by Pipkins. Damian Chong Qui had the assist. It would be all Mastodons in the second half.
Cameron Benford played in his 133rd career game for the 'Dons. Tying John Konchar for the most games in a Mastodon uniform.
Pipkins led the 'Dons with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Chong Qui added 13 points with six assists. Johnathan DeJurnett was 4-of-4 for eight points.
The 'Dons have won eight of their last 11 games. Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 13-10 (8-6 Horizon). Green Bay falls to 4-18 (3-10 Horizon). Green Bay was led by Cade Meyer's 13 points.
The 'Dons return to action on Thursday (Feb. 10) against IUPUI. It will be a 7 p.m. start at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The first 100 students will receive a t-shirt thanks to Lutheran Health. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the contest as part of a White Out.
